¡Hasta la victoria siempre! - Revolutiestrijder fidel castro is dood

The year 2017 will enter the history books with nine storms and four hurricanes. Especially because of Irma, the strongest hurricane measured in the open Atlantic. The Caribbean and Florida are not spared this Atlantic hurricane season, but are hit harder than ever before. Irma breaks or sets several meteorological records at once: he is the hurricane with the highest measured top speed of 297 km / h and holds this intensity for 37 hours. Between 30 August and 14 September he is responsible for damage to several Caribbean islands, such as Saint-Martin, Barbuda and Cuba, and ultimately takes the Florida Keys as a category 4 hurricane.

The devastation of Camaguey Archpelago and its consequences for the population:

On 8th September, Irma arrives at the northern island group of Cuba as a category 5 hurricane. The so-called Cayos were hit hard by strong winds and waves of up to 16 meters. The touristic infrastructure and the connecting dam to the mainland were also affected.

Not only the tourism industry is hit by Irma, but also other major industries, such as the sugar and agricultural industries. 40 percent of sugar mills are to be damaged, as are storage houses and other parts of the infrastructure. The cane harvest should start in November. Many farmers still live on Cuba's own cultivation of fruit and vegetables. The destroyed fields will limit the Cuban population even longer.

Further consequences for tourists:

Especially for the reasons mentioned above, the tourism for the Caribbean island is becoming more and more important and the clearing-up or reconstruction measures are already finished a few weeks after the storm. Apart from the northern island group, all regions of Cuba can be visited. The electricity network has been severely damaged, but is still in full operation. The Malecon will be closed for the time being in Havana. All other sights and museums are open for the tourist business. Even the hotels on the heavily affected islands Cayos Coco, Guillermo and Santa Maria are to be reopened until the beginning of the high season in November.

Tourists traveling in the coming weeks or months should, however, adjust to a few restrictions. It is therefore possible that path lighting or signs are not yet complete or not all meals can be prepared in hotels or restaurants as usual. Gas stations can be closed, so you should drive ahead with regard to tank filling.

The tourism sector is a top priority, so construction work is fast. As a Cuba lover we can only appeal to you that you should now travel to Cuba!

Stand: 26. Sept. 2017
